Portugal N2 March/April 2026
Posts relating to my trip to Portugal in the spring of 2026. North from Faro to cover the entire N2 and then across the top of Portugal before heading South along the Spanish border.
Finances
I thought i should share information on what the costs were for this trip for those that might be interested in taking a similar trip through the interior. Flight: I am fortunate that my costs for the flight were minimal as i am on Kates passes. I did however look on the Transat website and found that return flights were regularly available for roughly $800. Bike Rental: Soulful Bikes here in Faro are a great place to rent if you want to go on two wheels. My 9 day rental

Summation: Thoughts on the trip.
My first thought is that i am really glad that i decided to take this trip and get the chance to see parts of Portugal that i probably would not have seen otherwise. Having been to Porto, Liston and Faro a number of times, and a 2024 stay where we explored the Southern Algarve region, i knew that i loved Portugal, but really would not have had a reason do explore the interior where it not for this trip. From a motorcycling point of view, this country is a paradise of great r

Day 9: Moura back to Faro
You could not ask for better weather for a good day on the road on 2 wheels. It was already 12 degrees by 9am in Moura. I had a nice breakfast at the hotel, and packed up to be on the road just after 9. My path today would take me through the South Eastern portion of the Alentejo region before descending into the Algarve. Riding today was blocked at 4 hours and change, and i still had to allow for returning the bike by 4pm, so i did not make any long stops on the road, on

Day 8: Elvas to Moura.....Castles, Castles and More Castles.
Today was bittersweet. The weather was beautiful, the roads were empty and the scenery and points of interest were outstanding, but all the good things about the day were tempered by the knowledge that this was my second to last day on the road. Today was not scheduled to be a big day of riding at only just over 3 hours, but there were a number of points of interest that would make me deviate from the direct route to have a better look. The South Eastern part of The Alentej

Day 7: Castello Branco to Elvas
The weather today was much more cooperative, and i was on the road at 9:30 in 13 degrees. After a quick fuel up, i hit the road south. After about 45 minutes on the road, i came to a stunning river crossing with a great view back up the river valley. View of the river valley upstream. View of the bridge and the river downstream. You can just see a portion of the road up the far side of the crossing in the fist picture, and the pattern of tight roads when climbing or descend

Day 6: Foz do Sabor to Castello Branco
Route map for day 6 Had a great stay overlooking the Sabor river in the Douro valley last night in a really nice guesthouse. This morning for breakfast, my host had asked his neighbor for fresh oranges, and i put 4 fresh off the tree oranges through the juicer. Fortified with fresh juice and a few cups of good coffee i headed out around 9:45. The temperature was 6 degrees when i left, but the sky was clear and the sun was shining. Due to the temperature, i had to stop ever

Day 5: Chaves to Foz de Sabor
I did not realize that the clocks changed last night in Portugal, so when i went down for breakfast at 8:30 and the temperature was just 4 degrees, i was not looking forward to riding. I brought my cold weather gear with me, and generally speaking, anything in double digits is comfortable enough, but 4 degrees is certainly not comfortable for riding. I was covering nearly 250K today, which meant 4-5 hours of riding without any real breaks. At 10am, the temperature was at 7

Day 4: Castro Daire to Chaves and the end of the N2.
Leaving Castro Daire this morning the weather was clear and sunny but cold. I was glad to have packed my winter riding gloves, and pulled over within the first 10 minutes to swap to them. 5 minutes later, i ran into what i was really hoping was behind me, a closed road. This time however the detour i took was short, and got be past the closed portion of the road and on the way. The first 45 minutes of riding was nice, very much like yesterday, but nothing like what i was s

Day 3: Serta to Castro Daire
Today was a strange combination of beautiful riding and frustration. I left Serta at 9:30 on a beautiful sunny day and started heading north gaining altitude. The day was booked as a 210K ride, that was scheduled to take 4 hours. Based on the distance and the time estimate, i knew that i would be on tight roads, and passing through a lot of towns. My route planner had plotted out 31 points of interest along the way. Unfortunately the storms that hit Portugal in February a

Evening walk in Serta
I knew from riding through town that Serta was well worth a little foot time to explore and decided that no matter how tired I was, i needed to see more of this place. I started out on the boardwalk along the river. Really a nice riverfront with shops, cafes and park space. The riverfront boardwalk in the center of town. Before long, i noticed this while i was walking the boardwalk. Castle or at least ruins? Of course, that meant i had a hill to climb, because i had to know

Day 2: Ferreira do Alentejo to Serta
Today was a longer day. I was on the road by 9:30 this morning, and only got to my hotel at 4pm. I did stop for lunch, and had a couple of breaks along the way, but by the time i got off the bike, my rear end was completely numb. The riding today was very different from the tight twisties on the climb up from Faro. Although there were a lot of altitude changes, the roads were wider, and straighter as i rode through the heart of the agricultural part of Alentejo. Long high

Day 1: Toronto to Faro then to Farreira do Alentejo
I left Toronto on Air Transat on Tuesday the 24th in the evening. The flight was very good as usual, and big thanks for the fantastic treatment and service from the crew on TS232. Unfortunately my excitement to be finally actually going meant that i did not sleep at all on the flight. Arao from Soulful bikes met me in Faro at 7:30 local time. I had only packed carry on luggage and breezed through airport customs in roughly 15 minutes from landing to leaving the airport. W

Finally, the time has come.
After far too many weeks of anticipation, the time has finally come, and this is my last night at home before my flight to Faro and 2000KM across a country I absolutely adore. Of course, the night before a trip always means packing. In this case, i need to fit everything i will need for a 10 day trip into the paniers and topcase of the NC750X i have rented for the trip. I like to pack light, but this may be a record for an 11 day trip. I am trying hard to keep it to only car
